Was just wondering whether you've done any tests on the effectiveness of using games in the ways you describe here?
I am working on an initiative in the UK in which children are testing the effects of games on their fitness, coordination and emotional state.

You can see a film about the scheme here:

Would be interested to get your thoughts.

Best

This is a powerful experience. Thanks for sharing. Would love to get more information on the details so we might consider trying something like this.

I'd like to take a moment to say I enjoy the use of ellipses (...) in this blog entry.

Man, today was an absolute blast. For Mother Russia! I may end up buying this game for my laptop, because it's awesome.

Now that you mention it, there really hasn't been much advancement in using computers to teach kids. Maybe it's still viewed as a risk? I wonder what step has to be taken to fully integrate technology with schools....

Dave, I love this post. Reflective, responsive, GREAT teaching! I have one question, why do you think interest wained? I think if you think about why interest wained it might help figure out what to do about it. Would it be possible or worth asking last semester students why they lost interest? or what would make their interest stay at higher levels of engagement? I am dying to know more about this idea.

Whoever this student was, he was no doubt a super genius and good-looking.

I was surprised at how positive the reaction was to InQuizitor. Of course, I was expecting a good response, but not as much as what actually happened. It was also a fun exercise on making a test, which I think the teachers are MUCH better at.

The language barrier is a very minor issue since so many people in Italy and Austria speak English. Only on rare occasions did students experience difficulty with language.

Was the language barrier a serious issue? I can't imagine some of the kids you took with you being able to handle it well at all. Not saying any names...
